Finding stories in old diaries, photos, and more!
Exciting update! My Patreon page is officially up! If you subscribe to our Diary Detectives Tier, you will get access to a private discord chat group where we will discuss our current diary projects and more!
We've officially finished Georgia's 1895 diary, Ralph's 1901 diary, and Ralph & Georgia's 1903 diaries! We are now moving on to Ralph's diary from 1906. Tune in weekly on tiktok and Youtube live or catch the replays on Youtube!
On our weekly TikTok live, we're reading through a set of six diaries spanning 1895 - 1907 written by Georgianna (Newton) Slippy and her husband Ralph B. Slippy. The diaries begin with Georgia's high school life before marriage, and will share both her perspective and her future husband Ralph's through the years.
A particularly interesting year in these diaries is 1903- the year that Ralph & Georgia marry. We are so lucky to have BOTH Georgia and Ralph's diaries from this year, so we will be able to read that life-changing event from both of their perspectives!
These diaries were donated to us by Dan Sullivan, a collector who read the article about our previous diary series written in the Cedar Rapids Gazette and offered to provide us with our next project! Thank you Dan!
I can't believe we're already through all three of Todd & Edna DeLany's diaries (1943, 1944, and 1947). Next week (Nov. 8th) our livestream will be a little different- I'm going to make kolaches in honor of the DeLanys! I will post more details about which recipe I'm following here if you want to join in!
The plan moving ahead is to return the diaries to Jim, Todd & Edna's great-grandson. Then, we are going to move on to our next project - The Slippy Diaries! They were donated to me by a man who read the article about our project in the Cedar Rapids Gazette. More info to come on this exciting new adventure!
I've been researching the story behind this family in a local historical cemetery. It all started with Willie & Seth Horton's tragic story. Now, I want to decipher the graves of his siblings.
The Great-Grandson of Todd & Edna DeLany, who authored the Weatherman Diaries
Thank you to Jim for a wonderful conversation. In the video, we learn a lot about the DeLany family and their history! We talk about Edna & Nellie's relationship, Todd's relationships with his siblings, and more. This interview sheds new light on what was going on around the DeLanys at the time of the diaries!
Presenting the story of a 106-year-old diary, in the writer's summer home.
It's been a long journey reading, transcribing, and researching this diary from 1917. The writer, Anglesea, had a strong family connection with Rock Hall in Lawrence, NY. As though it were meant to be, this home is now a museum! The museum has been extremely supportive of this project, and invited me to come and give a presentation in July 2023.
We have finally found a picture of the writer we began this journey with- Todd! Thank you to his great grandson Jim for the photo and for supporting our efforts! The photo couldn't have come at a better time- right before we move on to the final diary of the three, 1947. After we are finished, the diaries will be returned to Jim!
Here is the recording of the first session of the 1947 diary.
You can read the 1947 diary so far, along with the fully transcribed previous diaries (1943 & 1944) here
A wonderful article was written by Grace King at the Cedar Rapids Gazette about the Weatherman Diaries! You can read the full article here, and I'll be sure to make a video about it soon.
Thanks to this article, I was able to make contact with Todd's great grandson Jim! We had a great conversation, with more to come. In addition, multiple people from Fairfax/Cedar Rapids reached out to me by email and shared some great info that will help us in our search!
We now know who the diary writer is! Thanks to Duke, who sent info about Edna which led to the author's identity. Thomas "Todd" DeLany lived in Fairfax, Iowa. Edna Gibson DeLany was his wife, and when he says "Dtr." Edna he's talking about his daughter with the same name. He also had a son Loyd and three grandsons- Norman, Daniel, and Roger. I made a video about the discovery and put photos and info into the diary slide deck.
